A great perfume doesn't just smell good — it says something. It's the first impression in a handshake, the last thing a date remembers, the thing your friends recognise before you walk into the room. Finding your perfume (your signature) takes patience, but it's worth it. This is the framework our in-house noses use when we help first-time XPerfumes customers pick their scent.

Start with the mood, not the bottle

Most people walk into a store and pick a bottle they think looks good. That's the wrong way in. Before you test anything, write down three words that describe how you want to feel when you wear it. Confident? Playful? Unreachable? Warm? Crisp? That short list is your filter.

Not sure where to start? Our 2-minute scent quiz translates mood into a fragrance family so you don't have to guess.

Know the five fragrance families

Almost every perfume sits inside one of five families. Knowing which ones your nose loves shortens the shortlist dramatically.

  • Floral — rose, jasmine, peony, tuberose. Romantic, timeless, and the most popular family in India.
  • Woody — sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, oud. Grounded, confident, and excellent for evening wear.
  • Fresh / Aquatic — citrus, sea spray, green leaves. Perfect for humidity — try Mumbai Mist or Goa Waves.
  • Oriental / Amber — vanilla, amber, resins, spice. Warm, sensual, long-lasting into the night.
  • Musk — skin-like, clean, intimate. The family that makes you say "you smell so good" without being able to explain why.

Test on skin, never on paper

Paper smell strips are useful for the top 30 seconds — that's it. A perfume changes as it warms on your skin. What you actually want to know is how it smells at hour 2, hour 4, hour 8. So: spray one wrist, go about your day, and check in every 90 minutes. If you're still thinking about it at dinner, it's a contender.

Don't test more than three at a time

Your nose stops being reliable after three scents. Five is too many. Coffee beans don't really "reset" your nose, either — a breath of your own forearm does a better job. Pace yourself.

Match the perfume to your climate

If you live in Chennai, Mumbai or Bengaluru, heavy oriental perfumes can overwhelm in summer. Aquatics and citruses cut through humidity. If you're in Delhi winters, lean into amber and woody perfumes — they bloom in cold, dry air. Read more in our best perfumes for Indian weather guide.

Buy a travel size first

A signature perfume is a long-term relationship. Don't commit to a full bottle on the first date. If you're shopping with us, each of our fragrances is 50ml — small enough to try, generous enough to live with. Pair two with a curated bundle for the cost of one designer bottle.

Final rule: trust your own nose

You'll get advice from friends, shop assistants, TikTok, everyone. The only person who has to wear the perfume every day is you. If it makes you want to lean in when you catch a whiff at the end of the day — you've found it.
